Parent Page

My name is Ms. Palumbo. I wanted to design this page for parents who work with their children on math learning. On this page you will find some helpful links and other information to use when planning fun math activities for your children. I hope that this information helps you and your child enjoy the math learning experience, and have fun too.

Why Manipulatives?
One of the best tools for a student to have is the opportunity to experience the math concept hands-on. Manipulatives can be used to teach math concepts to any age students. They can be used to talk through a problem, develop a model, determine and record solutions, and transition from old learning to new. Manipulatives in math help students by making abstract concepts tangible. Manipulatives include:
Cuisenaire rods
Small blocks
Unifix cubes
Dice
Dominoes
Trading Chips
Bottle tops
Variously shaped pasta
Beads
Seeds

Or other materials that support student learning

Math Activities

Game Show Fun for the Whole Family-Have your child create his/her very own custom Jeopardy game for the family. It's simple and can work for any subject area. Your child can be the host, while the rest of the family can be the contestants. Children will enjoy watching the family struggle with grade level trivia while they become experts! Remind the child to keep the cards for review. You can even ask them questions before a test to see if they remember the answers.

Cooking With Math- Cooking with math is always a fun way to reinforce general math skills. You can practice adding and subtracting fractions, and can also be used to refresh multiplication, division, and more. Most importantly, you'll be having fun spending time with your child and enjoying the opportunity to learn together. Begin by looking over ingredients. Ask children to identify the fractions within the recipe. Convert any whole numbers into fractions. Rewrite the recipe by doubling the amount of ingredients. Rewrite recipe by subtracting a given amount from each ingredient. Use new recipes for a double batch, start cooking!
